The Point: Kylie’s Lips

It’s not lips that are the problem, it’s tongues. For the Colson Center, I’m John Stonestreet with The Point.

Axis, one of my favorite ministries to teens and parents, published a story at their Culture Translator that had me hot under the collar. Kylie Jenner, the 20-year-old co-star of “Keeping Up with The Kardashians” and daughter of Bruce Jenner, isn’t the ideal role model. But countless young girls imitated her when she underwent lip-augmentation.

Jenner recently admitted that she did it because a boy said she wasn’t a good kisser when she was sixteen.

As the dad of three girls, this really bothers me. Lip augmentation involves injecting with silicon or another filler. Complications are often involved, including launching girls into a lifetime of insecurity about their appearance.

It’s not something any teen should be doing, least of all because a boy wasn’t satisfied with a kiss.

But it powerfully illustrates how destructive words are in our celebrity-driven culture, whether the words of a careless boyfriend, or the words of a sadly misguided celebrity with whom nobody should be “keeping up.”
