Spend any amount of time with a toddler, and the word will be ringing in your ears for hours later. “Mine!” she shouts over the blanket. “Mine!” she cries over the doll. “Mine!” if you dare to move her royal sippy cup. My brother could even provoke me at that age to argue over mom. “My mommy,” he’d start, and lavish an especially tight hug around mom’s waist. “NO! My mommy!” came my outraged reply, as I, in turn, hugged her knees. Had my mom not graciously intervened the argument could have gone on for hours. When we cry, “mine,” it is almost invariably a selfish response. It’s a response no one ever needed to teach us. Like that toddler, our grip can be deathly tight around the things we call our own. In stark contrast to this, when our God claims ownership, there is nothing selfish about it. From the most distant galaxy to the most delicate spider web, all of it belongs to Him. The Dutch theologian Abraham Kuyper once said, “There is not one square inch in the whole domain of our human existence over which Christ, who is sovereign over all, does not cry: ‘Mine!’” Everything belongs to Christ, and he is not selfish, but rather righteous when he declares His dominion. Graciously, God has entrusted us as stewards over this world of His. In this month’s issue of BreakPoint WorldView, Chuck Colson reminds of our role to faithfully steward creation. Kevin Belmonte reminds us of our calling to faithfully steward the legacy of faith to the next generation. And authors Pat Nolan, Kate Harris, and Kristine Steakley join the chorus to remind us we are called to faithfully steward our resources of time, money and energy to the hurting—the victim, the outsider, and the child wounded by divorce. A biblical worldview begins as we learn to cry, not “Mine!” but “His!” This is faithful stewardship. My prayer with this issue of BreakPoint WorldView magazine is that these articles would give us renewed passion to loosen our grip on what we call ours, remembering that we are first and foremost stewards, not owners, of all we have.
