I think I cried the first time my mother read me the story of Aslan’s death, as I sat in the sun on the blue couch under the wall-length windows of our Texas home. I don’t remember the moment, but I remember the feeling—being captivated and finding something more compelling in this story than in the flannelgraph Jesus I was supposed to love. I did love Jesus (I had already started writing Him letters and leaving them in a decorated shoebox-mailbox I made), but the story of Aslan and Narnia made me love Him more, made me feel my understanding in a new way. |
