Tom Gilson is a strategist with Campus Crusade for Christ, “on loan” to us here at the Colson Center for Christian Worldview. Tom, who runs the Thinking Christian blog, is helping us devise a longterm vision for bringing a Christian apologetics perspective to our Christian Worldview initiatives.

Oftentimes, apologetics and evangelism are aspects of the Christian faith that are separated from the rest of Christian teaching. Christian Worldview, for example, assumes a certain degree of faith and Christian sensibility in order to make sense of the whole world around us.

In short, Christian Worldview is seen as following the work of evangelism. Just as apologetics and evangelism help an individual come to a saving faith in Christ (justification), Christian Worldview is the continued understanding of Christian truths applied to the world around us as our faith matures (sanctification).

But the truth is, evangelism and Christian worldview are two sides of the same coin, such that a formal division between them is artificial. For example, one can certainly understand how someone studying a Christian perspective on history, literature, or biology might trace that thread back to the root source, coming to a faith in Jesus.

Similarly, a new convert, whose mind has been baptized along with the heart, now may want to know more about this God of theirs through any number of subject areas where God’s footprint can be discerned.

So while Christian thinkers oftentimes find their way to either evangelism or discipleship through Christian Worldview, thinkers like Tom Gilson are integrating both spheres of influence into a “discipleship of the mind.” He makes the point in this discussion that Western Christians should tuneup their minds better to defend and strengthen the faith.
