For Chuck, one of the most dramatic realizations of his career was how intimately linked fatherhood is with a healthy society, and how much damage men cause when they relinquish or abuse their role as dads.
"Our prison systems are full of people who never had the example of a courageous father — or any father at all. Over 70 percent of long-term prison inmates come from broken homes, and young men raised in fatherless households are at least twice as likely to be incarcerated as those from intact families."
As Prison Fellowship CEO Jim Liske testifies on this week's interview, that realization turned into a vision for Chuck: a desire to impact not only the lives of those in prison, but the lives of their children and the men in our society who find themselves taking on the mantle of fatherhood. Through programs like Angel Tree, Chuck and Prison Fellowship sought to reconnect incarcerated fathers with their children, and break the cycle of crime. BreakPoint, too, began with a burning desire in Chuck's heart to see the source of crime — a culture with a broken view of reality and morality — reformed. And as he frequently reminded us, rebuilding fatherhood has always been a critical component of that mission.
So naturally, Chuck was honored to write a glowing forward to Gregory Slayton's new book, "Be a Better Dad Today: 10 Tools Ever Dad Needs." In this book, Slayton shares his family's adventure in parenting, and how he learned through years of experience and study specific ways in which fathers can fulfill their critical role.
During this interview, John Stonestreet asks Slayton pointed and practical questions on how fathers can better love, lead, and prepare their children by investing time, re-arranging priorities, and showing affection. They also explore the unique ways in which fathers can shape the lives of sons and daughters, and how the way men love their wives communicates more to their children than almost anything else.
