'Buffy the Vampire Slayer faces her biggest challenge'
Rating: 4.00

"In the latest issue of Dark Horse Comics' Buffy the Vampire Slayer series, in stores today, Buffy weighs the life of being the 'chosen' Slayer against the life she's about to bring into the world. After some soul-searching with the son of another former Slayer, Buffy decides to have an abortion."

It occurred to me, Fred, that for all Joss Whedon's vaunted efforts to empower women, the way he handles their personal stories tends to infantilize them. Buffy's adult enough to keep saving the world from monsters, but she's far too young and immature to (1) avoid drunken sex or (2) handle a baby? What's wrong with this picture?

I think Whedon does try, but he doesn't get it. He doesn't understand what being a mature woman is really about. Part of it is taking responsibility for one's actions, and not just trying to erase the consequences.
Buffy Comic Part of Pro-Abortion Propoganda
Two things struck me about this issue of the Buffy comic

First, it rings false. On the TV show, the Scooby Gang regularly helped Buffy deal with challenges ranging from her mother's death to world-destroying demons. So, why would Buffy believe her friends wouldn't help her face the challenge of single motherhood or putting up her baby for adoption?

Second, it occurred to me that this is the SECOND comic book within a year with a blatant "pro-choice" message. The other comic was Issue #79 of the cult superhero series, Invincible (see cover below):

Both comics seem to be part of a trend in popular entertainment of promoting abortion as being "cool" or empowering women. Like everyone else, pro-abortion liberals who create TV, film, comic, etc. are see the polls that many Americans under 30 are very pro-life. Hence, these obvious pro-abortion story lines are part of an effort to halt or reverse pro-life trends among America's youth.

On that level, this is about more than just comic books.
Maybe she spends to much time around vampires?
