Though I think Sikhs in US service are allowed to wear turbans and-I think-beards. I suppose this is just an extension.

The only way to have recognized separate classes in the military is to have segregated units. That is not inherently unjust(look at the Habsburg or British armies) but it has uncomfortable baggage in America.
