"It seems like there are two schools of thought on drug addicts and alcoholics. One says that addicts made their miserable beds, so they might as well just go ahead and lie in them and leave everyone else in peace. The other says that addicts suffer from a disease, that they literally can’t choose not to drink or do drugs, and that they need to be treated and healed.
"I agree with both and I don’t agree with either. It just isn’t that simple. The way Cordelia puts it in Brideshead Revisited makes the most sense to me. 'One can have no idea what the suffering may be, to be maimed as he is…no dignity, no power of will.'"
