To a hammer, everything looks like a nail. To a materialist who believes only in material causes and processes, there are only material problems and therefore only material solutions. This worldview is too limited to be effective in the real world.

For example, if poverty is believed only to be the lack of material goods, the solution is financial handouts. But welfare programs based on this limited definition of poverty don’t work. They keep people dependent on the system.

As Marvin Olasky wrote recently in WORLD, a Biblical worldview expands the definition of poverty. Poverty is as much relational as it is financial. Solutions to poverty that ignore the inherent connection between work and dignity, or deny the central importance of marriage are not real solutions at all. They may be the best that limited worldviews based on materialism have to offer, but the Biblical worldview offers a clearer picture of the human person and more robust solutions.
