Some things belong to Caesar, but not this. I’m John Stonestreet, and this is The Point.
Yesterday I described the decision of HHS to mandate coverage of contraception in all insurance policies for employees regardless of the organization’s religious convictions about it. Obviously, this specifically affects the vast network of Catholic charities and hospitals who do not meet the extremely narrow requirements for exemption.
But, it is far more than a Catholic issue. What is mandated includes contraception that potentially could cause abortions. And, this creates a back door for other forms of contraception – including abortion – to be grandfathered in to the decision as another form of “preventative care.” In 2009, I committed with 500,000 others that I would gladly render to Caesar what belongs to Caesar, but never what belongs to God. That commitment is now being tested.
