Yesterday, I talked about Emily Herx, a Catholic school teacher fired when she tried to get pregnant via the process of in — vitro fertilization. According to news reports, this woman was a brave victim of a diocese who wants to deprive her of her reproductive rights. It’s the same “war against women” language we hear about the the Vatican’s rebuke of a certain group of American nuns.

But it completely misses the point. Herx signed an employment contract that asked her to embrace — as a representative of the church— the teaching of the church. Catholic nuns, even American ones, are subject to the church’s teaching on sexuality and procreation. That’s the thing about religions — they teach about things like human nature and sexual behavior.

The Catholic reason to consider in-vitro unethical many Protestant Christians haven’t considered:  IVF often creates and ends the lives of embryos so a couple can have one. This ends justifies the means approach violates pro-life principles in the name of reproduction. For thePointRadio.org, I’m John Stonestreet.
