I don’t like hell, either. But what should I believe about it?
The controversy surrounding popular pastor and Nooma video star Rob Bell has been big. Bell’s new book Love Wins wrestles with the traditional idea of hell, who’s there and why. I’ll say more about the book in upcoming Points.
But first, the discussion has revealed to me just how bad we can often be at thinking and discussing the tough questions. For example, some of Bell’s critics have not only dismissed Bell’s conclusion, but that he even asks the question to begin with. That’s a mistake. The questions are legitimate, and I’m asked about God’s fairness all the time.
On the other hand, many Bell supporters are not offering arguments. To say, “The old view of hell is mean” or “I can’t believe in a God if there is a hell” isn’t telling us about truth. It’s only telling us about your feelings. The question is – what is true?
We are to love God with our minds. And sometimes we aren’t very good at it.
