I just heard someone say that, and his strategy to change Tinseltown was the production of more family-friendly, made-for-television movies. Well, I hope he succeeds. In fact, study after study tell us that family-friendly movies far out-perform violent or obscene movies in audience and revenue.
But I'm afraid that simply producing more family-friendly entertainment won't change Hollywood. The transformation of Hollywood is already happening, the same way the transformation of the music industry happened. New technology changes the rules.
Too often, when it comes to media, Christians settle for moralized versions of what's popular. But historically, Christians haven't reacted to culture, we've led culture through innovation and creativity. This has been true in the arts as well as in medicine, science, politics and education. Our culture desperately needs innovation in the creative arts, and the Christians worldview should provide the motivation.
