MTV is known for pushing the lines of decency. Just this year, the show Skins reached new extremes of blatant sexuality, and the cast of Jersey Shore embarrassed most of Italy while filming season 4.

But at Sunday night’s MTV Movie Awards, actress Reese Witherspoon offered different advice. “I get that’s it cool to be a bad girl,” she said. “But it is possible to make it in Hollywood without doing a reality show.”

Reality shows push become edgier and edgier in order to hold on to an increasingly bored audience, and hollow people whose life goal is to be famous dehumanize themselves on camera for their brief stint with fame and money.

The vacuum of true art is a huge opportunity for Christians to offer fresh leadership. Historically, Christians have led the arts. Rather than discouraging young Christians from going to Hollywood, we should be sure they are equipped and accountable, and send them there to make a difference.

Comments:

To be fair, Lee, acting has never been a profession widely associated with virtue.
Commenting after a long day is always a poor decision on my part; I should clarify that the juvenile razzing has come from me, not from Gina. (If she's ever razzed me, I'm sure it was in a mature and dignified manner.)

Oh, and the 0.1%? Country music. ;-)

And I'll happily pay full price to see Christian movies and even secular movies with Christian stars.
John, in spite of some rather juvenile razzing over the years, I've agreed with 99.9% of everything Gina's ever said. That's true here, too.

And that goes for you, too - but I rarely comment on your posts because I don't know your tolerance for razzing. :-)

And I only commented on this entry because I thought a disclaimer of endorsement would be a really good idea. Bravo.
Agreed
I agree with Gina here. This wasn't an endorsement of Witherspoon at any level - in fact, her speech begin with some pretty crude comments before she talked about being a good girl. Pretty strange...but, I think there is real potential for Christians in Hollywood right now.
I think for a lot of us, there's a feeling that you take what you can get with the Hollywood crowd . . .
Uh - awkward?
Since Reese expressed a rather contradictory sentiment, in addition: http://www.aceshowbiz.com/news/view/00041097.html
