Recently, I told you about the work of my friend Kathy McReynolds to train Christians to confront our culture of eugenics by valuing all human life, including the disabled. For years, she’s taught a course at various Christian colleges and seminaries called Beyond Suffering. It begins where all Christian thinking should begin: with theology.
You may be surprised to learn there’s a theology of suffering and disability in Scripture, but there is. And it’s not only the disabled that need the church, we -- the church -- need the disabled! When any member of the body of Christ who are different than ourselves in appearance or function are marginalized, it stunts growth for the entire church.
This is one of the big “light bulb” moments in Kathy’s class. As one student reflected, “After four years of intense theology classes, the most important lessons I learned came through the lives of disabled people.”
This course is now available to churches. Come to thePointRadio.org and learn more about Beyond Suffering. I’m John Stonestreet.
