Last week, listening to one of those 24 hour Christmas music stations, I heard a somewhat recent song about Mary, the mother of Jesus which basically imagined what her emotions must have been. There’s similar songs about Joseph, the Wise Men, the Shepherds, and pretty much everyone else in the nativity story.
These types of songs may be emotionally compelling, but we’re missing something very important if we pull the Biblical characters out of the story they saw themselves in. In other words, we don’t need to wonder what Mary’s response was, we have her song recorded in Luke 1. Take a look -- you’ll be surprised how Mary understood her predicament.
Therapeutic Christmas songs about Mary are no match for Mary’s own song. Christmas is part of a much larger story, we mustn’t forget. This Saturday on BreakPoint this Week, Chuck Colson and I along with guest T. M. Moore will explore truths about the nativity from classic carols. If you miss it on radio, you can find it at ThePointRadio.org. I’m John Stonestreet.
