German theologian Karl Barth advised young theologians to “take your Bible and your newspaper, and read both.” It’s good advice. While other religions -- especially Eastern ones -- encourage us to seek escape from the world, Christianity doesn’t. We’re to be in the world, but not of it. Jesus prayed that his followers not be taken from the world, but protected from the evil one. This helps us make sense of his instruction to read the signs of the times.

After Barth told his pupils to read the Bible and the newspaper, he added: “But interpret the newspapers from your Bible.” That’s important. The Bible is the authoritative lens through which we can see the world correctly.

And that’s why I love resources like WORLD magazine and Chuck Colson’s BreakPoint. And this weekend on BreakPoint this week, I host a fascinating conversation between Chuck and World’s Mindy Belz about what we can learn from 2011 as look into 2012. Come to thePointRadio.org for more information. I’m John Stonestreet.
