Jesus vs. Religion

His unclear picture of Christianity is now much clearer. I’m John Stonestreet, and this is The Point.

Jeff Bethke’s video of why he “hates religion but loves Jesus” has over 10 million views on Facebook and YouTube. Chances are you’ve seen it.

“What if I told you Jesus came to abolish religion?” Jeff asks. “Jesus and religion are on opposite spectrums.” He condemns hypocrisy, excesses in the church, and political posturing before calling Christians to trust in God instead of religious devotion. The video is a bit of truth mixed with false dichotomies and big misunderstandings. I’d planned to critique the video, but I don’t need to. Several thoughtful responses have already been written, and I’ve linked to them at thePointradio.org. Watch the video and read the responses for a great little theology lesson.

But the best part is how Jeff responded to the criticism, especially Pastor Kevin DeYoung's. To DeYoung’s thorough critique, Jeff was teachable, not offended, and gracious. His response makes the message far clearer. Come to thePointRadio.org to see their exchange and tell me what you think. For the Point, I’m John Stonestreet.
