Later today, I will offer one of several Good Friday Meditations at my church on the final words of Jesus during His crucifixion. And guess which of His words I was asked to talk about? “I Thirst.” Yep, that’s it. “I thirst.” In fact I’m supposed to spend 15 minutes on these two words.
This is one of those details in the text of Scripture that almost seem incidental. Like for example, “Jesus wept.” Growing up, I remember learning that as Bible trivia –John 11:35 is the shortest verse in the Bible. True but why is it in the Bible? Why on earth did the Holy Spirit want us to know these details?
I think one reason is that the Holy Spirit really wants us to know Jesus was actually on earth. He was really here and really human: he ate, he drank, and he wept - just like you and I. Just like Adam. And that’s important because he is the 2nd Adam, who thirsted while redoing in the world what Adam undid. And that makes today good. For thePointRadio.org, I’m John Stonestreet.
