My church used to be a bar. In fact, it used to be a bar that used to be a restaurant that used to be a church. The 100-year-old building kept changing hands until it’s most recent incarnation as a bar named -- and I’m not kidding -- Syn. The place had such a terrible reputation the city shut it down after consistent incidents of public disturbance.

Well, Syn needs quite a bit of redeeming and restoring, and we’re working on it. But we were reminded Sunday that the real church is not a building; it’s a people in which God dwells. The church is the latest chapter in redemptive history of the God who walked in the Garden, embodied a fiery bush, indwelt the tabernacle, and finally became Man. He now indwells His church until -- in the New Heavens and New Earth -- he’ll make a permanent dwelling among us. If God makes it a point to be here with us, we shouldn’t be waiting for escape.
