Why is everyone bashing religion? For the Chuck Colson Center for Christian Worldview, I’m John Stonestreet with The Point.
It’s becoming more popular by the day to criticize religion in favor of “spirituality” or “a relationship with Jesus.” But when people say they hate religion, what they usually mean is that they hate legalism.
Tullian Tchividjian writes in The Christian Post, “There are two ways we can miss the mark of righteousness before God...outright sinfulness,” and self-righteousness. In fact, he says, pretending we live up to God’s standard when we don’t is even more dangerous than ignoring God completely.
Timothy Keller explains in his book, The Reason for God; that Christianity is the only faith in which God saves sinners by grace alone. But you have to realize your need for that grace, and admit failure. Those who assume their own righteousness have already doomed themselves. “The only way into Christianity,” writes Keller, “is the low door.”
That’s how sinners are changed. And if we want to change how people feel about religion, we have to recognize we all go through the same low door. For The PointRadio.org, I’m John Stonestreet.
