It happened again.  J. P. Morgan Chase reported they lost billions last week in risky speculative trading. This comes on the heels of other unethical lapses chronicled recently by Wall Street Journal columnist Peggy Noonan: a tourist beaten and robbed in plain public, more teachers having affairs with students, Secret Service agents picking up prostitutes.

The character of our country seems to be in serious trouble, she says. So how do we reverse the trends?

C. S. Lewis offered an answer in The Abolition of Man. In the chapter “Men Without Chests,” he talks about the need for what he called “trained emotions.” Basically it’s the chest — our moral courage — that helps our heads, or the intellect, steer our bellies, or our passions. Lewis says knowing right and wrong isn’t enough; we must train ourselves to do it.
