Slate, and online news site has decided to disprove that children do better when raised by two, committed, responsible parents. The facts, of course, are stacked against this effort, so Slate is soliciting stories from single mothers, trying to illustrate how well that setup can work.

For example, one of Slate's writer's, Pamela Kripke, recently wrote a piece detailing all the lessons her daughters are learning because of her divorce from their fatheryou know, like financial sacrifice and responsibility. She mentions lots of anecdotes, but cites no social science to make her arguments. Well, because there is none. As Brad Wilcox wrote on Slate months ago, all research suggests that children brought up by their biological parents do best.

That's not to say we should shame single parents. The Church can and should fully support single parent families, while still holding up the good of married, heterosexual parenting as the ideal to which we should aspire. I'm John Stonestreet.
