22The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; 23they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. 24 “The Lord is my portion,” says my soul, “therefore I will hope in him.”
The Story: The destruction of the
“The Lord, the Lord, a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness, keeping steadfast love for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, but who will by no means clear the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children and the children's children, to the third and the fourth generation.” And Moses quickly bowed his head toward the earth and worshiped. Exodus 34:6-8
The Structure: We now are at the central point of the five laments, an emotional reprieve from utter despair. Every comment made up to this point prepares the sufferers to find grace for the moment. Every comment after reinforces the dire need for day-by-day grace to sustain. The promise here is not an incidental reference to the steadfast love, but the very pinnacle of Lamentations, highlighting its critical importance. The steadfast love of the Lord is His covenant obligation to reclaim the hearts of His people, rescuing and refocusing them back on His mission. Having lost all, the remnant sees no hope. Yet like the Levites, they have an inheritance, the Lord Himself (Num. ).
Ask yourself this question on a day you face your severest of trials. “What or who do I trust?”
