Commercial FAIL

In Vanity Fair, Andrea Buchanan tries to come up with an idea for a pro-choice Super Bowl commercial to present the "opposite message" to Tim Tebow's pro-life one. First of all, if you're trying to come up with the "opposite" of a young person being allowed to live and speak up for his own right to life, you're already in trouble. But Buchanan doesn't seem to see that and goes valiantly ahead:
My commercial would open with a wide shot of abortion protestors (many who are members of Focus on the Family) marching in front of the doors of a non-descript abortion clinic in anywhere U.S.A. I would show them shouting “baby killer” and “devil worshiper,” and depict images of them throwing holy water on the women who are attempting to walk through the doors and see a doctor. I would cast the commercial starting with the anti-Tebows: the unattractive, the unfit, the look of stark raving mad. [Emphasis mine]
Hey! Social Darwinism and the Super Bowl -- now there would be a great fit! Why didn't anyone ever think of that before?

Andrea Buchanan is right about one thing: She shouldn't be expecting a call from CBS anytime soon.

  1. Here's the response I posted to Ms. Buchanan's article: ..//.. "it’s impossible to argue the other side of this. There is no other side. We all want life. We all want family." Aw, c'mon Andrea. Of course there's another side: "I don't want to go through the birthing process. Even if I gave the baby up for adoption, the brat might come and find me later in life. And I *certainly* don't want to have to give my precious time to actually raising a child. Cause, you know, as a woman, I guess I just can't do it all."
  2. Well, yes, that's the tack PP must take. Of course, everyone knows giving birth to a baby with Downs Syndrome is much riskier, to a woman's health, than giving birth to a 'normal' baby - because... (I'll get back to you).
  3. Interestingly, after I wrote this post yesterday, I heard via my dad about this response from Planned Parenthood: http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,584784,00.html?test=latestnews
  4. "We all want life. We all want family."??!!?!? Methinks the lady doth protest too much. Besides, isn't the whole point of "pro-choice" that not everyone wants an additional life, and a family, at certain times? She makes that very point in the first paragraph describing her commercial. A paragraph in which, in fact, she says the anti-Tebows - the unattractive, the unfit - should be killed before birth. But keep telling yourself that abortion is **not** linked to eugenics; repeat it, because it's so easily forgotten. // Gina, it's an excellent idea - let's keep a tally of attractive actors versus unattractive ones in those commercials. I'll be particularly interested to see if any of them feature a homely middle-aged man with a beer belly reaching for another cold one, or if it's all young, fit, handsome/beautiful people holding their Budweisers. So I'd argue that Social Darwinism has sorta kinda been a feature all along...
  5. That's why I say pro-abortionists are in a no-win situation when it comes to this commercial (that... they haven't seen). Unbelievable though (as in, it's something like an anti-Poe's Law here). Here's my "opposite message": Show pictures of mass destruction and suffering in Haiti. Then show a calm, green, windswept vista. Then the narrator wishes Haitians had been aborted to avoid the suffering. ...//.. Would anyone promote/advertise that? Of course. But not me, that was satire (if you couldn't tell).
  6. "She shouldn't be expecting a call from CBS anytime soon." You never know, but I am hopeful that they pay no mind.
