In a State of Disbelief

Is the sky falling? Is hell freezing over? Is Texas messin’ with us?

Like so many other states, Texas has been suffering a budget crisis for some time. And of course since everything is bigger in Texas, the budget gap is in excess of $18 billion. A big part of the problem is the more than $3 billion the state spends each year on corrections. The state has the fifth largest per capita prison population in the nation, with one in every 71 adults behind bars.

But now, folks in Texas—a state that officials say has never closed an entire adult prison—are ready for a discussion about doing just that. And bringing down costs big time.

Officials are beginning to say that Texas could soon be in a position like no other state—a good one.

But it sure makes the mind boggle.

Christopher, Kathryn is having some problems with the comment system, so she asked me to post this response for her:

"The information you question is in the article: 'Now, with the Legislature facing a possible $18 billion budget shortfall in 2012-13, McReynolds said he hopes his colleagues remember that lesson: "This should be a no-brainer. We can't afford to do that again."'"
deficit
I looked on the Austin American Statesman online edition and found an several articles talking about the "projected $18 billion budget gap" (swallow hard). Good reporting Ms. Wiley!! Let's keep the pressure on the states to make quality decisions for their citizens.
$18B?
I have done some searching, and I can't find TX w/ an $18B gap or deficit anywhere.

I did find a projection of %GDP. But, that doesn't seem to match anything I read on the subject.
