Art Imitates Life

A number of months ago I brought up the subject of mothers serving in the military, and shared my concern over the policy which leaves many children orphaned.

Last night I watched a new episode of NCIS, "Worst Nightmare," which reflected this problem. The parents, both military officers of course, were at sea and out of communication range, and their daughter was being cared for by her paternal grandfather.

The child is kidnapped. We find out later the grandfather is good at a lot of things, including hand-to-hand combat.

The show didn't commend or condemn the actions of the parents, but perhaps if some drama series like NCIS started to show the misery and loneliness these children go through when they are orphaned, perhaps the policy would be changed.

Comments:

That sort of thing is unnecessary and easily solved. There is no reason why the military can't make small mercies. It did after the case of the Sullivans. Why not simply refuse to allow spouses to do combat service in the same tour?
