Child Slaves Are Picking Your Cocoa Beans

One of my sons sent me a link to this insanely funny site (warning: really rude language in places). But the Kamikaze cooks dropped the humor for a moment to tell readers about a serious problem this chocoholic was unaware of: that on the Ivory Coast, children are being enslaved and forced to pick cocoa beans. After quoting reports from UNICEF, Fortune Magazine, and Wikipedia, the cooks conclude that "about 5% of this stuff--one in twenty chocolate bars you buy--was grown by some kid, probably less than 13 years old, who has been kidnapped from their parents and is forced to work by men who hit him or her if they don't think the cocoa picking is going fast enough."

They recommend that concerned chocolate consumers visit the Cocoa Initiative to Stop Slavery for ideas on how to combat this problem. And for non-slavery made chocolate, go here.

Comments:

Thanks for this article. Just today it caused me to make a different chocolate choice.
Sorry, my fault. They're fixed now.
Anne,
Two of the links are broken: Cocoa initiative and hot to combat this problem.
However a good article especially since I am a chocoholic.
