A last word from Christopher Hitchens

Hitchens's final essay has just come out in Vanity Fair -- and it's about Charles Dickens. I approve. And I hope that thinking about Dickens and his belief in God -- for he did believe, whatever the debunkers say -- did Hitchens some spiritual good.

(Speaking of Dickens, Dickensblog is celebrating his 200th birthday with a charity fundraiser. Head over here if you're interested in helping out!)

You guys are sharp. I knew one of you -- or all of you -- would catch that "Greatest Birthday" line. :-)
"the Greatest Birthday Ever Told"????!!?!?! Um, Gina,... isn't that a bit surprising, coming from Hitchens?

And "darkening our Decembers" - I'm trying to imagine just how dark December would be without Christmas lights everywhere. If anything, December is a bit too well lit:

But it is good to see a balanced treatment of Dickens in an article that might well not have been balanced.

And paying you to read Dickens seems a bit like paying a fish to swim, but I think I can find a few bucks to help Somaly Mam rescue slaves.
