Pastoral Thought of the Day

. . . courtesy of the Rt. Rev. Lawrence C. Provenzano, Episcopal bishop of the Diocese of Long Island, on the recent statement from the Vatican that provides an expedited path for disaffected Anglican congregations to enter the Roman Catholic Church:

“At the heart of all of this is the reality that the Roman Church is willing to welcome angry, reactionary, misogynistic, homophobic people.”

Comments:

Angry people? Why you mean "Woe to you scribes, and pharisees, teachers of the Law." The church could never let angry people like that inside. Horror of horrors!
I was just reading through some of the nytimes comments and this one stood out: "15. October 23, 2009 2:02 am /// Fr. Farrell welcoming Bishop Lawrence Provenzano to “the ranks of important religious voices in New York City” here in the comments made me laugh. Yes, Fr., he’s joining you (and me!) here in irrelevance. /// The good Bishop has it right, of course. The “Roman Church”, as he would have it, does in fact welcome angry people, and reactionary people, and misogynistic people, and homophobic people. And of course it welcomes mean people, coarse people, gluttonous people, greedy people, proud people, and lecherous people. It welcomes drug abusers and drunks. Happy people, rich people, poor people, liberals, gays, old and young. /// So many strange and even sinful people would no doubt make the good Bishop and good Fr. Farrell uncomfortable, and so perhaps it is best that they not make the journey. But if they could lower themselves, I say they would be most welcome. — Thomas"
Just to be clear here, this is a case of a) A BISHOP of a major church body b) accusing members of his own denomination (currently, at least) c) of hating both women and homosexuals d) for holding to the traditional teachings of his church on matters of women's ordination and same-sex marriage and ordination e) which is still the basic understanding of the vast majority of the Anglican Communion worldwide. Is it any wonder why the Episcopal Church is atrophying at an unprecedented rate?
It is good to see that the apostate Episcopalian has again proven the stupidity of his apostacy. God makes it clear that all sexual sin, including homosexual sin, is nothing less than an abomination to Him (per Leviticus 18:22, and Fist Corinthians 6:9-10)! Ephesians 4:26 says: Be angry but sin not... which takes the legs out from under any comment in the apostate's response to the Vatican's offer. It is not less than the apostate Episcopalian's own sin finding him out, as promised for those who go against God's plan; just as stated in Numbers 32:23.
Yes, Jesus welcomed those rejected by certain religious leadership. He weclomed them, he loved them...and he also told them to go and sin no more. Why do so many people seem to forget that "go sin no more" part. The church, all of us who call ourselves the church, need to be more courageous in balancing BOTH the "love them" and the "go sin no more". This isn't new stuff. We all agree on the "love them" part. The burden is on the some of these new voices to show how they are reckoning with "go sin no more."
Why is "reactionary" an insult? Some changes are good and some are bad. And when good the proper thing to do is embrace them and when bad the proper thing to do is react to them. Assuming "reactionary" is bad is assuming that what is new is therefore good.
Hmmm, didn't that guy named Jesus welcome people who were rejected by the religious leadership?
Angry and reactionary, yes - as the church in which they were raised and their families may well have served for numerous generations has decided to completely toss all of their beliefs and standards (such as Biblical revelation and the foundations of the faith) right out the window. Some things are worth getting angry about, and some things are certainly worth reacting to. And yes, it's great to see an apostate Episcopalian revealing his true beliefs.
It is good to see an Episcopalian who is willing to say the truth about this. Most are taking the high road concerning this appeal to the lower instincts of the Roman church to attrack those who are comfortable with misogony and bigotry, and I suppose that is admirable from a standpoint of not lowering ones self to the Roman level, but, sometimes the truth must be told.
