And the winner is . . .

A few of us were considering drafting, as a joke, a BreakPoint script about Oscar dresses just for the fun of hearing Chuck say words like "taffeta" and "Vera Wang" and "low-cut." But we couldn't think of a worldview angle....

The subject came up when Dave the Swede caught me clicking through pictures of Oscar-nominated actresses in their glittering garb (I was on a break!).

There were a couple of gowns I thought actually made the actresses look lovely (those worn by Penelope Cruz and Sandra Bullock) but on the whole, the women just looked...not great. Tired. Ragged. Scrawny. Why is this? They just don't seem to be going for a glamorous look anymore.

I don't think anything tops the dress worn by Grace Kelly in 1955 (a pale blue silk gown designed by Edith Head) as she accepted the Best Actress Award for A Country Girl. Glamorous and classy. Very old Hollywood. That black and white Valentino gown Julia Roberts wore a few years ago was also to die for....
