Haiti had a significant number of orphans -- an estimated 380,000 -- even before the Jan 12th earthquake. Now, according to this
World article by Jamie Dean (subscribers only), thousands more have been added to that number, and orphanages which existed before the quake, and which escaped destruction, are strained to the limit trying to care for them.
The head of one orphanage says that many of the children, especially those who are physically and mentally impaired, will likely be in their care for the rest of their lives. So, as you pray for Haiti, pray especially for the orphans. Ask God if you need to adopt a Haitian child when "Anderson Cooper leaves and long after people forget about the Baptists from Idaho." Then, if you are able, send money to help with their care. As one worker said, "This isn't an option....This is a scriptural mandate. We have to care for these orphans."
