'A Listening Heart'

Pope Benedict XVI recently delivered an important address to lawmakers in his home country, Germany. While he was specifically addressing the German Parliament, I think this speech should be handed out to our American lawmakers, and disseminated to our fellow citizens.

"[T]here is also an ecology of man. Man too has a nature that he must respect and that he cannot manipulate at will. Man is not merely self-creating freedom. Man does not create himself. He is intellect and will, but he is also nature, and his will is rightly ordered if he respects his nature, listens to it and accepts himself for who he is, as one who did not create himself. In this way, and in no other, is true human freedom fulfilled." Pope Benedict XVI, German Bundestag (September 22, 2011)

Comments:

Philip, I fully understand your viewpoint and frustration. But, I have to agree with Ellen. The cliche about "Jesus didn't call us to be successful, only faithful" is true. It is the Holy Spirit Who opens minds and hearts and makes them pliable. It is our job to spread the word. Indiscriminately. The rest is up to Him.
However, Philip, we are teachable. The Lord Jesus did not leave us in the cesspool of our sin and he invites believers to partner with Him in His work to call humanity to repentance and reconciliation. Let us not despair of humanity and abandon the work Jesus has commanded. Rather, let us "'Go into all the world and proclaim the gospel to the whole creation.'" (Mark 16:14)
A listening Heart
Unfortunately, Kim,we are too attuned to our cravings to listen; our acquisitiveness, physical drives and lust for power are drowning out reality. And so we're left only with rage, dysfunction and despair for responses to our futility and emptiness.
