It's World Down Syndrome Day

The idea is "to help raise awareness of what Down syndrome is, what it means to have Down syndrome, and how people with Down syndrome play a vital role in our lives and communities."

In honor of the day, here are a couple of posts by Amy Julia Becker, author of the book A Good and Perfect Gift: Faith, Expectations and a Little Girl Named Penny (I have the book, in one of my enormous piles of review copies, and am hoping to actually review it one of these days!):

Why Do Some See My Daughter's Life as Wrongful?

What You Can't Tell about My Child with Down Syndrome Just by Looking at Her

Comments:

You Can Actually Tell a Lot!
The 1st time I ever saw a Downs Syndrome child, I was 19 and 6 months pregnant. I cried every day for the next 3 months. When that first child was born healthy and normal, I put the other child out of my mind.

In the ensuing 50 years, I've gained some experience with Downs Syndrome children. Most of them are happy and healthy. Most of them are interested and interesting. ALL of them have a heart/mind/soul that God prepared specifically to give a gift to the world. Our job is to stop long enough to figure out what that gift is!

I think that's a LOT to know about a Downs Syndrome child just by looking at her!
