Five things I learned at the PFM memorial service for Chuck Colson
Topics: Chuck Colson

1. There is a surprising number of people who can do excellent imitations of Chuck Colson on the telephone.
2. It was not wise, if you valued your dignity, to mention paper toilet-seat covers in Chuck's presence.
3. Or colonoscopies.
4. Nor was it advisable to let Chuck prepare your oatmeal. Not unless you were really, REALLY into cinnamon.
5. Chuck was deeply, dearly loved by a great many people.

(Well, that one I already knew.)

FYI, for those who haven't heard, a public memorial service is to be held at Washington's National Cathedral. The date has not yet been announced.

Comments:

Thomas A' Kempis said that the two great equalizers of humanity were the dish and the "pot." Evidently, Chuck found ways to inject humor in both circumstances
I doubt I could get permission to share the colonoscopy story. :-) But as for the other one: A longtime employee once wrote a joke memo to Chuck and Tom Pratt, complaining about the new toilet-seat covers. Chuck later wrote her a lovely "Thank you for your 20 years of service" letter -- on a toilet-seat cover. She still has it, and brought it with her yesterday for all of us to see.
Great summation, Gina! Chuck would have really enjoyed it.
I think I want to hear the paper toilet seat cover and colonoscopy stories.
