Should We Be Worried?

We need to speak out against the latest attempt to muzzle free speech. While Representative Jim McGovern (D-Mass.) has good intentions, his proposal would spell the end of freedom.

Before we heap hot coals upon Rep. McGovern, however, we need to take responsibility for the reason the proposal is being proposed. In "Individualism and the Death of Freedom," Jim Tonkowich explains why.

I think I'm looking for Tonto in all the wrong places!

Even the Lone Ranger had Tonto.
Indinidualist chickens come home to roost
Great point, Carol. For many years we have trumpeted an individualism in this country that increasingly denies lasting commitment and fragments the possibility of real community. But, as Mr. Tonkowich points out, this produces a growing vulnerability to manipulation and eventually repression, whether of free speech or even more potent forms.
While the idea originally impressed me, Mr. Tonkowich's ideas impressed me even more. I have always seen myself as "The Lone Ranger", religiously, so Community is a really hard concept for me. I often feel like a 3rd wheel. But I have been coming around to seeing Community as valuable, lately, and I understand his point. We can't get where we want to be all by ourselves...we need each other.
