Last month, CVS, one of America’s biggest pharmacy chains, settled with Christian nurse practitioner Robyn Strader. She sued the company for not accommodating her religious convictions about contraceptives. In 2021, CVS stopped providing any accommodations regarding “pregnancy prevention services.”  

Forced to choose between her job and her faith, Strader, a CVS MinuteClinic employee who had never had to prescribe contraceptives since she started in 2015, sued the company for violating her religious freedom.  

First Liberty Institute’s Senior Counsel Stephanie Taub, who helped represent Strader, hopes that now other “companies across the country will recognize the religious liberty of their employees and work to protect those rights.” 

Let’s hope so. With CVS set to offer the abortion pill at more of its stores, cases like Strader’s are likely to become more common. Nurses and pharmacists who oppose abortion will need more than settlements. They need companies and employers to respect their religious convictions and not force them to choose between their faith and their livelihood.
