The Point: The Media’s Canaanite Wipe-Out

This is what “fake news” looks like. For the Colson Center for Christian Worldview, I’m John Stonestreet with The Point.

When the American Journal of Human Genetics reported that 3,700-year-old Canaanite DNA closely matches that of modern Lebanese, much of the media took this as an opportunity to bash the Bible: “Study disproves the Bible’s suggestion that the ancient Canaanites were wiped out,” reported The Telegraph.

“Bible says Canaanites were wiped out by Israelites but scientists just found their descendants living in Lebanon,” announced The Independent.

The Daily Mail, Express, ABC Online, the Tech Times and others all had similar headlines. But they evidently forgot to read the Bible, which clearly reports in Joshua, 1 Samuel, and elsewhere that the Canaanites not only survived the Israelite conquest, but were a continual source of grief for God’s people, often luring them into idolatry.

That Canaanite descendants are alive today doesn’t disprove the Bible—it confirms it! We even learn from the gospel genealogies that Jesus Himself was partly descended of Canaanite stock, through His ancestor, Rahab.
