The Point: The Miracle of Jesus

12/22/17

John Stonestreet

Do you believe in miracles? For the Colson Center, I’m John Stonestreet with The Point.

The Christian belief in miracles drives secularists nuts. Or to put it more gently and philosophically, as Pope Benedict did in his book, “Jesus of Nazareth: The Infancy Narratives,” miracles “are a scandal to the modern spirit.”

Two miracles in particular require steadfast belief from Christians and foster stupefied scorn from secularists: the incarnation of God the Son through the virgin birth, and the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.

Why? Because as Benedict points out, modernists may allow that so-called “religion” can make people happy, or help them in the so-called “spiritual” realm. Fine and dandy.

But a God who acts in the material world? Who might change matter and upset the laws of physics? No way! That’s outrageous!

But as Benedict said, “If God does not have power over matter, then He is simply not God. But He does have this power, and through the conception and resurrection of Jesus Christ he has ushered in a new creation.”

This I believe.

From all of us at the Colson Center, Merry Christmas.
