The Point: SPLC Exposed

John Stonestreet

Finally, someone’s watching the watchdog. For the Colson Center, I’m John Stonestreet with the Point.

Recently, the Southern Poverty Law Center—an organization that once did good work identifying hate groups like the KKK and Neo-Nazis—has turned its sights on Christian organizations.

Alliance Defending Freedom, the Family Research Council, and others have all been named to SPLC’s list of “hate groups” because they oppose same-sex marriage.

This has consequences. When a lone gunman attempted a mass shooting at FRC in 2012 and was narrowly stopped by a security guard, he admitted he did it because of this “hate group” designation.

Thankfully, someone is holding the SPLC accountable, at last. The FBI has removed the organization from its recommended resources, and a new website, SPLCExposed.com, has a running feed of headlines, many of which are appropriately critical of the watchdog group.

Disagreement shouldn’t be labeled “hate.” Thankfully, it looks like true tolerance is prevailing…at least this time.
