The Point: Yes Is Even Better than No

12/4/17

No is good, yes is even better. For the Colson Center, I’m John Stonestreet with The Point.

If you’ve ever doubted that sin is crouching at the door ready to control us, just look at the scandals out of Washington and Hollywood.

Scripture tells us we are to master sin. The big ones and the little ones. But how do we do it?

First, we must recognize temptation when it comes. Pray for what the Church fathers called “awareness”—and not just of the spiritual danger around you, but also awareness of God’s presence.

Then, well, just say no. Ready to salute the guy who just cut you off on the highway? Tell yourself, no! Reaching for that second doughnut or glass of wine if those are your kryptonite . . . say no.

And then, say “Yes.” What I mean is God’s “Yes.” When the fellah in the Porsche cuts you off, pray for him. Struggling with greed or lust of any kind? Thank God for His creation, and the good provisions you already enjoy.

And finally, don’t forget that simple but powerful prayer to our refuge and strength: “Jesus, help me!”
