The Point: Chance Takes a Sabbatical

It’s not every day that a rapper takes a sabbatical.

Chancelor Jonathan Bennett’s, otherwise known as Chance the Rapper, is one of the biggest hip-hop artists on the planet. In 2017, he won three Grammy Awards, including Best New Artist, Best Rap Performance, and Best Rap Album.

His journey to the top of the music world also included a return to his Christian faith. He was raised by his grandmother in the church, fell away, but then returned when his daughter was born. Now, I can’t endorse the language and themes found in his music, but Chance the Rapper made an interesting announcement recently.

“I’m on a plane headed out of the country on my first sabbatical…” he wrote on Instagram. “I’m going away to learn the Word of God which I am admittedly very unfamiliar with… I’ve been brought up by my family to know Christ, but I haven’t taken it upon myself to really just…read my Bible.”

He went on, “…how much time do we spend as followers of Jesus to really just read and KNOW His Word?”

That’s a good question for all of us.
