The Point: Eating Their Own

The snake of political correctness is eating its own tail. For the Colson Center, I’m John Stonestreet with The Point.

A “progressive” radio station in Berkley, California, has rescinded its invitation to atheist superstar Richard Dawkins to speak on the beauty of science. Why? Because Dawkins had “offended and hurt” people on Twitter.

They weren’t talking about the offensive title of his book, “The God Delusion,” or his slander of Christians. He was banned from Berkeley for his statements about Islam.

As Hemant Mehta noted at Patheos, Dawkins responded that his words actually “strongly condemned the misogyny, homophobia, and violence of Islamism, of which Muslims—particularly Muslim women—are the prime victims.”

Folks, everyone is at risk these days of tripping the PC alarm. It’s simple cowardice on the radio station’s part—perhaps a fear of protests or a loss of ratings. And when does it end? By the logic of political correctness, pretty soon on campuses and radio stations like the one in Berkley, the only thing folks will be listening to is silence.

I say, let Dawkins speak.
