The Point: Raising a Sports Star

11/2/18

Is your kid really top 3? Out of 10,000?

I love sports, especially basketball. I played in high school and college. I can’t wait to teach my young son the game.

How cool would it be if he grew up and played for Duke, and then the Celtics? Well, the truth is, he probably won’t. And you know what? Your child probably won’t, either. No matter the sport. The math says so.

Only 3 out of 10,000 male high school basketball players make the NBA. It’s 9 out of 10,000 for the NFL. And for female high school hoopsters, it’s 1 out of 5,000 for the WNBA.

So, for all of us who don’t have the next Steph Curry on our hands, let’s set realistic goals for our children’s involvement in youth sports: have fun, stay fit, let’s help them develop discipline and appreciate teamwork.

And then make sure your kids have enough time for school work, rest, and other activities, including church and volunteering—things that may not get them to the Boston Garden, but will help them grow into well-rounded adults and disciples of Jesus.
